The Dree river valley trek is a break from the usual fare that is on offer in the Mishimi Hills. Unlike other routes in this area, this particular trek involves minimal climbing and is marked by well defined trails. Here we will follow the course of Dree river–one of the major rivers in the Dibang valley. We will start our journey from Damben–the last ITBP station about 25 kms from Anini and we will follow the river upstream to the starting point of the river’s journey in the plains of Dibang valley.
The trek is ideal for intermediate and seasoned trekkers. Even though there are no steep uphill or downhill, there will be some amount of swamps and bamboo thickets that one will have to negotiate. So some amount of prior trekking experience is expected. There will be experienced guides and local support crew to help you in the trek as well as show you the rich bio diversity of this beautiful valley.
Itinerary
Day 01: Your port of arrival is Dibrugarh
the second largest city in Northeast India. The city has an airport and is also well connected via railways and roads. So you can directly fly in here or take a train/bus from Guwahati or anywhere you are travelling from. You will be transferred on a car from Dibrugarh into Arunachal Pradesh – a pleasant drive through picturesque tea garden estates of upper Assam. The journey also includes an hour long ferry ride across Lohit river.
Day 02: Roing- Riyali
Continuing on our journey to the flag off point of the Dree river valley trek, we will start from Roing – the district capital of Lower Dibang Valley–after our breakfast to Riyali. On our way we will cross Mayodia Pass–the highest pass in the Dibang Valley districts (2655 meters).
Overnight at a guest house located near river Ithu, about a kilometre from the village Riyali.Day 03: Riyali to Anini
Today we will start very early to reach Anini – the last town near the starting point of our trek. The journey will take us the whole day and we will reach Anini only in the evening. This is where we’ll drop our extra luggage before we start off on our trek early next morning.
Day 04: Anini to Damben to Camp Cholo
The first day of the trek we will be transferred on cars to Damben – the end of motor able road and the start of our trek. The first couple of kilometres will be through meadows before we enter the jungle interspersed with bamboo thickets. We will cross an ITBP outpost called “Camp Chai Pani” one of the very few spots in the trek connected to the mainland via satellite phones. Depending on your walking speed, we will reach our first camp in 4-6 hours. We will camp by the river for the night.
Day 05: Camp Cholo to Camp Chigu
Today we will continue on our trek along the river, negotiating our way through the swampy jungle trail to reach our destination – Camp Chigu. The picturesque trail runs through the heart of the forest and is very rich in bio diversity. You will come across a lot of exotic birds, fascinating insects and many small animals. However, keep your eyes out for snakes and in rare occasions, bears. At the end of today’s trek we will reach the second ITBP outpost. We will set up our camp across the river, between two hills with many fountains.
Day 06: Camp Chigu to Patthar Camp
Today is the final day of our journey where we will continue on our way upstream. We will have to cross the river twice during the course of our trail today, cross some impressive waterfalls along the way. Number of bamboo thickets will come down drastically and the forest will get denser. But like other days there will be no dearth of scenic beauty. You will come across a few hunting/fishing/logging camps set up by locals. After about 4 hours we will reach our last camping spot along the river. A short trek means there will be a lot of time to explore the area on your own or even go fishing if you have the inclination.
Day 07: Patthar Camp to Camp Chigu
Today we begin our way back into civilization and take the road back to Camp Chigu. Camp Chigu is probably the most beautiful camping site of the entire trek. Since it is going to be another short trek, there will be enough time to look around, swim in the river or just relax.
Day 08: Camp Chigu to Damben to Anini
Today is a long day of trek as we trace our way back to Damben and then to Anini. We shall stop at Chigu–the spot of our first day camp for a quick lunch and continue to trek to reach the ITBP camp in Damben. We will essentially be covering two day’s trek in one day so we will have to have an early start. Once in Damben, our transport vehicles will be awaiting us to transfer us back to Anini. Overnight at a guest house in Anini.
Day 09: Anini to Roing
After yesterday’s long day of walking, today will be a long day on the car as we travel back from Anini to Roing, covering a distance of over 300 kilometres through mountainous roads. Overnight at an orchid farm couple of kilometres from Roing proper.
Day 10: Roing to Dibrugarh
Today is the last day of the tour and we will have a short distance to cover. We should reach Dibrugarh in the first half of the day itself and we will spend the rest of the day in a tea estate guest house in the tea capital of the world. This is also a reserve day in case we have any kind of delay in the trek.
